UV Curing Accessories: Reasons Why you Should Invest

UV Curing is a speed curing process in which high intensity ultraviolet (UV) light is used to create a photochemical reaction that instantly cures inks, coatings, adhesives, and other materials. A highly popular technology, UV light curing is used by manufacturers in a vast range of industries thanks to its extensive list of benefits such as cost efficiency, faster production, and increased safety.

In order to ensure a successful UV curing process, users must first select their UV curing system which will be used alongside their light curable material. There are a selection of different systems and materials to choose from which have been specifically designed to meet different objectives.

However, there are also a range of key accessories available which can be integrated into your existing equipment to optimise the UV curing process. In this post, we have outlined the key UV Curing accessories that we think you should invest in and the reasons why.

Light Guides:

Implementing a lightguide into your UV curing process is the most economical means for delivering high intensity UV light to adhesives, coatings, and other materials. They efficiently transmit ultraviolet and visible energy from a source mounted inside the chosen spot-curing unit to the curing area. Available in single and multi-legged configurations, the technology within the wands transmit the highest level of light intensity available and prevent degradation over time.

Additionally, lightguides have excellent cold light properties and transfer no infrared radiation. Their superior fibres for transmission in the UVA-light range are protected against individual fibre breakup which ensures longevity. Filter mount assemblies can also be used with lightguides to allow for hands-free curing.

Radiometers:

Radiometers are a highly useful tool as they allow users to monitor and record the light curing process. Firstly, a radiometer increases reliability as it confirms that the chosen light-curing system is delivering the correct light intensity and dosage levels required for successful UV curing. If the radiometer provides a low UV intensity measurement for example, then this signals that a piece of apparatus such as the bulb, lightguide or reflector must be replaced.

They can also be used to measure the transmission rates of wavelengths through the chosen substrate. Measuring the light intensity reaching the cure point below the substrate is a crucial step in ensuring an efficient curing process. Radiometers are also extremely important to ensure that users are sufficiently shielded from UV exposure as they measure the intensity of stray or reflected energy whilst in use.

Mounting Stands & Shields:

Mounting stands are predominately used to securely hold UV curing lamps or emitters in place when used in a bench top configuration. Lightweight and easy to use, mounting stands are available in kit formats which come with additional extras such as a pedestal and safety goggles.

They can also be paired with a light shield which will protect users from the visible UV light whilst still allowing full visibility of the part. Light shields are part of a flood lamp light-curing system that incorporate an optional shutter.  Dymax’s range of shields are complete enclosures and they offer the operator full protection whilst working with the equipment.

Replacement Bulbs

The UV curing bulb is a crucial component in any light curing process. Choosing a high-quality bulb ensures that the material cures with maximum intensity and helps prevent this from degrading over time. Furthermore, this can lower operating costs and result in far fewer bulb changes. New Product: Fisnar DC50 Digital Dispense Controller

Ellsworth Adhesives Europe is delighted to announce the addition of the new Fisnar DC50 Digital Dispensing Controller to its vast dispensing product range.

Following the success of Fisnar’s DC100 and DC200 dispense controllers, the DC50 has been designed specifically to suit more simple and general purpose dispense applications.

The low-cost controller is extremely easy to set-up and is sold with a foot pedal switch and syringe stand included. Its user-friendly programming enables a dispense cycle to be quickly created and automatically displayed within minutes. This straightforward design makes it a highly reliable dispensing solution for both new and experienced users.

The DC50’s dispense operation can be controlled by a foot pedal whilst in manual mode, or at a pre-set time using timed mode. The controller also boasts a digital timer display as well as an easy to read analogue pressure gauge. The combination of these functions ensure precise and repeatable shot sizes are achieved in every dispense application.

Additionally, the dispense controller is fully compatible with dispensing both low and high viscosity fluids thanks to its adjustable 0-100psi pressure regulator and vacuum suckback control valve. This valve also prevents material waste as it stops fluid from dripping from the dispense tip when not in use.

All dispense controllers within the DC series are made to the highest quality standards, and the DC50 is no exception. It has been manufactured with a durable aluminium housing and industry standard pneumatic system components. Furthermore, the systems internal 24V DC electrical circuit ensures full compliance to the latest CE machinery safety standards.

A German-based manufacturer, RAMPF is well established within the tooling sector and have been producing board materials for 40 years. There are several advantages to choosing RAMPF RAKU-TOOL board materials. They do not have a fiber structure like wood, allowing them to be machined easily and quickly. This allows for the boards to be modified as required based upon individual application requirements, and can also cut operating times and improve productivity. The diverse range of materials are available in varying thicknesses and densities, whilst still being relatively lightweight.

What are the different kinds of board materials?

The RAMPF portfolio provides the complete package solution comprising of boards, matching adhesives and repair pastes.

Styling Boards (SB) – Styling Boards are semi-finished products which are made of polyurethane. The RAMPF RAKU-TOOL styling and design range includes board materials with densities of 0.08g/cm up to 0.47g/cm, making them suitable for both CNC machining and manual processing. The apricot-coloured board materials available in the range have become a firm favourite with customers. Typical applications for styling boards include negative molds for casting, supporting structures for pastes and NC program testing.

Modeling Boards (MB) – Rudolf RAMPF, founder of the RAMPF Group, produced the first polyurethane modeling board in the early 1980s, and these have been continuously produced and improved ever since. Modeling Boards are semi-finished products made of polyurethane and are available in densities ranging from 0.60g/cm to 0.72g/cm. They can be milled quick and easily on CNC machines, and in some cases, manually processed. Modeling boards offer fine surface finishes, excellent dimensional stability, and good chip formation. Typical applications for RAKU-TOOL modeling boards include master, cubing, and presentation models.

Working Boards (WB) – The largest range of boards in the RAMPF portfolio is their Working Boards. The semi-finished products are made of epoxy or polyurethane and have densities ranging from 0.69g/cm to 1.70g/cm. The epoxy working boards within the range are mainly used as lay-up tools for composites and are widely utilised in the automotive and aerospace industries. They offer a superior surface finish and can maintain tolerances even after being subject to temperature variations. RAMPF RAKU-TOOL working boards boast excellent dimensional stability and can be machined quickly and easily. Typical uses include metal forming, hammer forms and foundry patterns.

Board Adhesive – We also supply a range of RAMPF RAKU-TOOL board adhesives. The RAKU-TOOL adhesive range includes one and two component systems and are available with differing degrees of temperature resistance dependent upon the chosen application. The adhesives properties and, in some cases, colour are specifically matched to their corresponding board material to ensure a durable and long-lasting bond. RAKU-TOOL adhesive systems provide outstanding adhesion, excellent flow properties and cure rapidly at room temperature.

The partnership began under the John Burn Ltd branding; however, the brand and its product range were absorbed by their parent company Ellsworth Adhesives Ltd in 2018. The RAMPF portfolio is now available to buy under their brand Ellsworth Tooling Solutions and has shown impressive sales growth year upon year.

New Ellsworth Adhesives Irish Division

Ellsworth Adhesives Europe, a leading distributor of adhesives, specialty chemicals and adhesive dispensing equipment, is pleased to announce the launch of a new Irish division.

Across Europe, Ellsworth Adhesives has increased its footprint by opening branches in the UK, Spain, France, Scandinavia, Poland, and Germany.

Ellsworth Adhesives Ireland joins these regional locations with a new office based in Cork, South West Ireland. This provides a physical entity to allow Ellsworth to operate within Ireland and potentially mitigate any risk following the departure of the UK from the European Union.

The distributor has already enjoyed success within the territory; however, the addition of this new facility will provide customers with a direct and immediate point of contact. Ellsworth Adhesives Ireland will strive to provide customers with local technical support, product guidance and delivery options, all of which are of heightened importance during these current uncertain times.

Ensuring it is well positioned to serve Ireland, Ellsworth have appointed a dedicated Sales Manager for the region. Ciarán Walsh has over thirty years’ experience working in the laboratory supply, chemical and adhesive industries, with his most recent role as Managing Director/Regional Sales Director with Dymax Engineering Adhesives Ireland Ltd.

Ciarán will report directly to John Henderson, Managing Director of Ellsworth Adhesives Europe, who comments: “Whilst we already have a strong presence in Ireland, we are confident that the addition of this new division will allow us to attract an even wider customer base in the area.

New Product: Robnor ResinLab Epoxy Foam System

Ellsworth Adhesives Europe is pleased to announce the addition of a new epoxy foam system to its material range. Manufactured by Robnor ResinLab, PX590EF/NC is a two-component epoxy foam system which has a low density of approximately 0.3g/cm³.

The lightweight foam is particularly suitable for void-filling applications. It has good compressive strength for backfilling of parts and can also be used in the casting of buoyant materials, or as a machinable epoxy foam for model making.

Thanks to its low density, only a relatively small amount of material is required to fill a large volume. This reduces material waste and makes PX590EF/NC a cost-effective choice.

Furthermore, PX590EF/NC from Robnor ResinLab offers good thermal performance post-cure and has an operating temperature of up to 150°c.

With a low viscosity of just 3000 (when mixed), this new material is very easy to process and work with. The system’s slow foaming reaction generates low pressure during expansion and has a cure time of 24 hours at room temperature.

Additionally, PX590EF/NC is also available as a three-component system. This allows users to adjust the foam density to suit their specific application requirements.

Robnor ResinLab PX590EF/NC is RoHS compliant and can be purchased in bulk, twin-packs or 2:1 ratio cartridges.
